Why use a clinic based treatment for extraction?

The pros and cons of at home treatment should be considered when making your decision to treat blackheads. While you may save a bit of money investing in an aestheticians extraction tool of your own or getting a deep cleaning product or pore strip the results are not comparable and in some situations can make your skin worse.

Deep cleaning pore strips remove the blackheads and comedones (clogged hair follicle in the skin) and rip off the outermost layer of skin as well, often leaving the tip of a blackhead and pore clogged. Skin preparation is selected to minimise irritation and potential scarring.

Other side effects from home treatment are associated with excessive pressure causing broken capillaries in sensitive reddened skin (otherwise known as couperouse), hyperpigmentation or increasing dark spots, provoking an infection and causing it to spread.

Great home skincare is essential for maintaining skin balance and controlling oiliness in the skin as long as you are regular with your routine. Thames Skin Clinic designs your home treatment products specifically for your skin and provide advice and support on how to use them properly. We believe your skin needs regular check-ups to ensure the correct products are used and we recommend you book a monthly review or appointment when your skin products finish to ensure they are the correct products for your skin.

Professional treatments for blackheads and whiteheads

While the right home treatment and specialist home skincare are a great step towards fit and healthy skin we advise those suffering from deeper blackheads, comedones and whiteheads to consider our elite HydraFacial™ treatments.

HydraFacial™ uses a patented vortex technology for extraction, through a special HydraFacial™ wand tip. Vortex technology safely removes blackheads and blockages from pores within the skin, making it very comfortable and less likely to damage the surrounding skin.

Extraction takes place after the skin has been thoroughly cleansers, exfoliated and soften the blackhead sebum and dead skin plugs blocking the pore. The combination of the above steps help to remove the clogged pore safely and effectively.

Whiteheads are harder to remove than blackheads as typically a layer of dead skin cells has grown over the plug of sebum. In order to remove these safely your aesthetician has to make a very small opening in the skin with a lancet (fine sterile needle). Regular treatments or our weekly focused HydraFacial™ course will help reduce build up of thickened skin or deep blockages and aim towards clearance.

Things to remember when getting extractions

Extraction treatment should not last more than 10 minutes. When placed within a Hydrafacial this will form an important section of the whole treatment. If you have many blackheads or whiteheads you should not expect them all to be removed in one treatment.

If you have acne or blemishes, extractions are the most important part of a facial for you. Once your follicles are cleared our your skin should start to improve. However you may need to get a facial every one – two weeks until your skin is completely clear. It is also important to following up with the right products and good home skin care routine.

Other treatments options are available and may be preferred. Topical products include the ZO skin health redness program including rozatrol, a clinically proven redness reduction serum.

Is this treatment suitable for me?

Extraction treatment with our Thames Skin hydrafacial is suitable for all skin types and ages. There are some medical conditions, allergies and medication that can affect treatment including shellfish and honey. Please discuss this treatment with us if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

How safe is treatment?

HydraFacial extraction treatment is extremely safe. Thames Skin Clinic therapists are highly trained in the use of HydraFacial treatments to stimulate the very best extraction process. Please consulted one of our team to discuss treatment options.

Will I feel any pain or discomfort during my treatment?

No. HydraFacials are skin stimulating and involve exfoliation as well as relaxing elements including the rejuvenation phase with LED therapy. This is the most luxurious part of the treatments and we hope to leave your skin refreshed, rejuvenated, pampered and relaxed.

Are there any associated risks?

There are no side effects or risks associated with this treatment. We discuss your medical history and allergies prior to treatment.

How much downtime is usually needed and what should I expect?

There is no downtime at all following an HydraFacial extraction treatment. You may leave with a spring in your step feeling fabulous and confident with gorgeous glowing skin.

Procedure

Following a consultation with one of our wonderful Thames Skin Therapists or your initial new patient consultation with Dr Hemming we will discuss your treatment goals and plan for your treatment. Thames Skin Clinic will check your medical history is suitable for treatment and you will sign a consent form. We record all of our patients photographs for comparison later.

If you have a history of cold sores an anti viral medication may be prescribed.

Hydrafacial treatment has 3 stages with 6 steps plus optional PERK, an additional step in the program for your focused lip or eye area, or both.

Lymphatic stage Gentle lymphatic massage techniques via a special suction handpiece or finger tip drainage to increase blood circulation and detoxify, resulting in better overall skin.

HydraFacial Stage Serums are used with the HydraFacial. MD™ range delivered direct to the skin surface by a new hydropeel™ tip designed to cleanse, hydrate and focus in individual needs such as acne, congestion, fine lines, wrinkles, laxity and sagging.

LED STAGE LED application during which red and blue LED is applied to the HydraFacial treated skin to aid rejuvenation and treat acne.

Red LED light enhances cellular metabolism, repair and renewal of damaged skin cells, stimulates collagen and improves skin texture and firmness.
Blue light targets the bacterial known to cause acne. The acne bacteria reacts to blue light following which is it destroyed.

Side effects

Side effects are minimal if any.

Treatment is painless and doesn’t irritated the skin greatly. A few patients may experience slight tightness and redness of the skin which can last for a couple of hours. Treatments using peel products may prolong redness.

On very rare occasions redness may continue for a day or so and sensitive skin around the eyes can become swollen, a cold compress will help should this side effect occur.

The risk of scarring is very rare with this procedure.

Treatment is not suitable if you

are taking Roaccutane or oral isotretinoin within the last 12 months,
have active skin infection, cold sores
have problems with skin healing or lymphatic drainage.
have true allergies to aspirin, shellfish and honey.

Aftercare

Use any post-treatment skincare products provided and ensure you have a good quality sun screen to protect your skin. We can recommend a suitable SPF for your skin.

I look younger!

I received Fractora treatment now 3 weeks ago from Dr Hemming. There has been a slow healing and gradually I see myself less tired looking and my lines have noticeably reduced . The beginnings of a jowel I had along my jawline has disappeared which is exactly the part of my face that bothered me most. It seems as if I’ve had a face lift! My skin is firmer and the hollows less deep. I dare say I look younger.

Go, you will not be disappointed.

I have recently moved to Barnes and was searching for someone that could deliver wrinkle injections on my skin but I wanted someone reputable, Doctor led, and that didn’t over do my face as I don’t want it to look like I have treatments. I had my appointment with Anna, the lovely lady that owns this clinic and what a brilliant experience it was for me. I knew my end result would be exactly what I was after. I shall be back, for other treatments because I feel I’m in safe hands and you all know what you’re talking about. No I know why Anna has such a great reputation within the industry. I’ve had the pleasure of going to Dr Anna for a few years now and was delighted when she opened The Thames Skin Clinic as so close to where I live. The space is gorgeous and bright so perfect for any treatments you may require! I’ve been used to, in the past to going into these darkened rooms where they surely can’t treat you properly.
