How to Protect Your Skin During Warmer Months

Posted 31/07/2024 | Advice

As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, many of us head off for holidays and outdoor activities, leaving our regular skincare routines behind. At Thames Skin Clinic, we understand the importance of maintaining healthy skin all year round, especially during the summer months. While we see a temporary lull in clinic visits as our patients enjoy their vacations, it’s crucial to ensure your skin isn’t damaged while you’re away.

Here are some essential tips to keep your skin protected and healthy until your next visit.

 Use SPF Regularly and Generously

Sunscreen is your skin’s best friend during the summer. Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Remember to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating.

Don’t skimp on the amount—most adults need about a shot glass worth of sunscreen to cover their entire body.

Pay extra attention to commonly missed spots like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet.

Wear a Hat (Especially If Bald)

A hat is a simple yet effective way to provide additional protection from the sun. Wide-brimmed hats offer the best coverage, shielding your face, neck, and shoulders from direct sunlight. For those with thinning hair or bald spots, a hat is particularly crucial. The scalp is highly susceptible to sunburn and damage, so keeping it covered can prevent painful burns and long-term skin issues.

Limit Sun Exposure to Cooler Hours

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., making these hours the most harmful for your skin. Try to plan outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. This not only helps protect your skin but also reduces the risk of heat-related illnesses.

If you must be outside during peak hours, seek shade whenever possible and take regular breaks indoors to cool down.

Additionally…

here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain your skin’s hydration and overall health.

Wear Protective Clothing: Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants provide an extra layer of protection against the sun.

Avoid Tanning Beds: Tanning beds can be just as harmful as the sun. Many of our patients like to head to the salon for a pre-holiday tan but we encourage you to embrace your natural skin tone or opt for self-tanning products if you desire a sun-kissed glow.

By incorporating these simple yet effective strategies, you can enjoy your summer holidays without compromising your skin’s health. Regular use of SPF, wearing protective hats, and limiting sun exposure during peak hours are key practices to keep your skin safe between your in-clinic treatments. At Thames Skin Clinic, we are committed to helping you maintain beautiful and healthy skin all year round. Remember, the best skincare routine is the one you stick to, even while basking in the summer sun. We look forward to seeing you back in the clinic with your skin glowing and well-protected.
